Admission and Counselling Process CLAT 2025

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2025 was written by almost one lac candidates all over India. In normal course, admission and counselling should have been completed by now – May 2025. But CLAT 2025 academic year has seen an inordinate delay. Courtesy – many legal challenges and petitions in high courts demanding revaluation of score card.
The trouble started right from the time CLAT results were published on December 7th 2025. The issue was finally resolved only May 7th 2025 when Hon Supreme court ordered publication of revised results after making the required answer key changes All these developments have visibly impacted the result release, the counselling timeline and process and the overall admission timeline. This no doubt has impacted law students who were eager to start their careers in the prestigious NLU’s.
Thankfully as of this time when the blog is going for publication, all confusion is over and the admission process for the various NLU’s is in full swing.
Reasons Behind the Delay
The main cause of the delay was the answer key discrepancies in the CLAT 2025 answer key released last year. This was particularly so in Set A of the question paper. Four questions, namely – 14, 37, 67, 68, 100 were identified having wrong answer keys. The questions were from Logical reasoning and English sections. Many applicants voiced their concerns about the accuracy of these answers, which led to petitioners filing their cases in different High Courts. The Supreme Court consolidated these cases and transferred them to the Delhi High Court for a unified hearing.
Please note that first petition was filed by two law aspirants in Supreme Court right when the provisional answer key was released by CLAT consortium on December 6th.
Publication of new Results and revised Counselling Schedule
After multiple hearings by Delhi high court and further Supreme court intervention, the consortium released the new results on May 17th 2025 for the CLAT undergraduate program. Four answer keys were changed. The supreme court had to intervene once more because even after Delhi High court order, one of the petitioners – All India Rank 22, filed petition in Supreme Court questioning the revised answer keys.
The updated scorecards, with the corrections in accordance with the revised answer key, are available for download on the official CLAT consortium website-https://consortiumofnlus.ac.in/.

The cut off for CLAT 2025 is somewhere in the range of 87 to 95 marks in the general category. In the reservation category, it somewhere in the range of 83 to 90 marks. What needs to be taken into consideration is the change in the mark list after publication of new answer keys on May 17th 2025 by CLAT consortium. Typically, an addition or reduction of mark can make a difference of near to 100 in the candidate’s rank standing (either way).
The first allotment list for the different NLU’s is scheduled for release on May 26, 2025. This list will specify the first-level allocation of seats across the CLAT 2025 participating NLUs as per the revised merit rankings. For those who are allotted seat to the various NLU’s, the registration amount will be balanced in the NLU’s fee structure.
Impact on CLAT Aspirants and other changes
The unexpected delays, have no doubt led to a lot of anxiety among CLAT aspirants. Many are frustration over this (now finished) stretched-out indecisiveness. It has impacted their academic and future career plans. It needs to be noted that many aspirant-students take an academic year break after plus two in order to prepare for CLAT exams. Also, many candidates start their preparation right from plus one onwards. The developments have also forced NLU’s to adjust their admission timelines and processes in tandem with the revised schedule.
There have been many positive changes also at the Institutional (NLU) level. For example, Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University (RPNLU) in Prayagraj is now part of the CLAT Consortium. It will offer admissions to its five-year integrated BA-LLB program via CLAT 2025. There are total of 60 seats for the programme.
Additionally National Law University Bhopal will now divide’s seats between existing BA-LLB program and its newly introduced B.Sc.- LLB (Hons) program in cyber security. Candidates must mention this in the preference list for CLAT 2025. Note that it is exclusive for plus two science stream students.
