AILET 2027: A Complete Preparation Guide for Aspirants
The All-India Law Entrance Test (AILET) is more or less regarded as one of the most competitive entrance exams in India. It is the gateway for admissions to National Law University (NLU) Delhi. Unlike the other 25 NLU’s in India which come under Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) consortium, NLU Delhi goes through its own exam process.
And you will be surprised to know that AILET is actually tougher than CLAT!
So, aspirants’ keen for a seat at India’s premier law institution, here is everything that one should be aware of about AILET.
Date:
AILET follows a similar timeline as CLAT. The exam is held in December preceding the particular academic year. This means all those selected for AILET 2027 commencing academic year would have written their exams on December 14th 2025 – the official date announced by NLU Delhi.
The Process stages:
- Official Notification: Usually, the notification comes out in May or June. AILET 2027 students should closely start following the dates from May 2026 onwards on NLU Delhi website – https://nationallawuniversitydelhi.in/.
- Activation of application Window: Most of the years it opens in first or second week of August
- Lat date for Application: By November end of first week or by November middle. For example, in 2025 last date for application was November 10th. In 2024 it was November 18th.
- Exam date: Mostly in first or second Sunday of December. The entrance exam date for AILET 2026 was December 14th 2025.
Current Status: As of writing this blog, NLU Delhi is in final stages of the admission process for 2026 Academic year with the Second Merit List having been released on January 22.
Under Graduate (UG) course offerings by NLU Delhi:
B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) is the flagship UG course offering given by NLU Delhi. It is a five -year programme divided through 10 semesters.
(Please note that NLU DU also offers Post Graduate LLM and Doctoral programmes also)
There is total 110 seats offered for AILET B.A. LL.B. (Hons.)
There are additional 10 seats for Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO candidates.
Out of the 110 seats ,60 seats are reserved for – OBC- NCL, SC & ST, EWS. The balance 50 seats are merit based.
Eligibility Criteria for AILET B.A. LL.B. (Hons.):
The candidate must have passed their plus two higher Secondary or equivalent examination with at least 45% marks. In the case of SC/ST/PwD candidates it is 40%.
Candidates appearing for their final plus two board exams in March 2027 are also eligible to apply. However, they should produce their plus two pass certificates at the time of admission (June – July 2027 is the academic year commencement)
Please note that there is no upper age limit for taking the AILET exam. This makes it an attractive option for career switchers.
Exam Pattern & Syllabus
There was a significant change in AILET exam pattern from 2022 onwards:
- The QT and Legal aptitude sections have been removed.
- The legal section was merged into the logical section.
- Almost all the questions are passage based and demand high intensity thinking.
There are total 150 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) distributed as follows:
- English Language (50 Marks): Most of the English questions are comprehension based. It probes the candidate’s ability to evaluate and analyse content-based passages.
- Current Affairs & General Knowledge (30 Marks): Covers national and international events. There is heavy emphasis on legal General Knowledge and Indian Constitution.
- Logical Reasoning (70 Marks): This is the longest and “must win” section. It is a mix of critical and content reasoning and analytical puzzles. Many questions in the logical section integrate uses of legal principles as the basis for reasoning questions.
Marking Scheme:
Every correct answer – +1
Wrong answer -0.25.
Skipped answer – No mark reduction
Application Fees:
The application process is entirely online via the NLU Delhi official portal. The fees are structured as follows:
For General category / OBC / EWS / Foreign National: ₹3,500
For SC / ST / PwD category: ₹1,500
Selection for AILET is completely based on All India Rankings. The results will be released maximum 1 weeks after the exam is over. The average merit based all India cut off score is 105 to 110.
Almost 20,000 students write the AILET for 110 seats. This means 1 seat for 182 students. So, the toughness can be well imagined.
